Hello,
I sent a new file to my email for testing. After I pressed the synchronize button, it said :

Code:
All files are in place!

No new files!
All names are good!

So my new file was not recognized by SMEStorage system. Please help me solve the problem.

By the way, could you please suggest another email provider that works with SMEStorage, better than Gmail and guide me how to use it ? I think Gmail has a lot of limitations, such as small max file size or limited bandwidth. I do not understand why lots of people prefer Gmail.

In addition, Does SMEStorage get any problem with files uploaded by Gspace ? Which is better to use, Gspace or Fireuploader ?

Thanks

There are a few restrictions that Gmail has that you should be aware of:

1. Firstly ensure you have gone to settings - > Forwarding and POP /IMAP and enabled
"Enable Pop for all Mail (even Mail that has been downloaded)"

2. If you are sending Mail from Mac Mail then some attachments do not show up in Google Mail. If you cannot see the Paperclip sign for an attachment then it will not be sync'd. Remeber that only attachement are treated as files. If you actually want to download emails then you need to use the email backup facility.

3. Sometimes even though you have enabled POP 3 to be downloaded as per 1 GoogleMail can get a little confused. We are not sure what causes this and it does not happen on every account. In this case mark any items you are having trouble with as unread in Gmail and this should fix the issue.

In terms of other mail providers, you can use any email provider that supports enabling POP3 or IMAP for external email access.

For example Inbox.com provides a free email service that enables you to do this. Once you have registered for an account you need to go to "settings" and enable POP 3 access. Then on SMEStorage you just need to enter you email and password (which we encrypt) and the POP3 / SMTP details (my.inbox.com) and click the checkbox that ask if SMTP needs to be authenticated. You can then use this email client as a storage account.

I have configured the gmail settings as you guided, it still not work. I wonder why you choose gmail as one of the default options for new registrations, but not Inbox.com or something else. In my oppinion, Gmail team do not like their service to be used as a storage service. There are problems everytime I try to use gmail to store my files (I have used Gspace, Gdrive, and now SMEStorage). I think you should replace Gmail by Inbox, as Gmail is not a good and reliable selection.

We have many users using Gmail who do not have problems. It is a free service and our support of it cannot account for Gmail restrictions. Still we have some of our own staff who use it for their storage account using our product and they have no problems.

We find the best way to use GMail is as follows:

1. Register for a new GMail account
2. Ensure you have enabled POP3 as detailed previously.
2. Enter the GMail settings in smestorage
3. Do an initial sync
4. Upload some files to check everything OK
5. Send an external email with file attachment to the same Gmail account
6. ReSync

We'll happily step through trying to resolve your problems with you on Skype or IM - email use at support AT thesmespace.com with you details and we'll try and figure out where you are having the problem.

One more thing - if you have enabled the settings in Gmail we discussed in the previous mail, note that once enabled they only apply to files on GMail from the point the settings were enabled, not for prior files.

I think I will not use Gmail for as a storage anymore. I just found out these from Google Help :
Code:
Your use of the Gspace is against Gmail Terms of use

Using third party software applications that interact with Gmail
directly violates the Terms of Use that all users must agree to before
creating a Gmail account. Google does not endorse any third party
applications meant to interact with Gmail, and we will not provide
support for them.
For more information, you can also check out Gmail's Program
Policies.
http://mail.google.com/mail/help/terms_of_use.html
http://mail.google.com/mail/help/program_policies.html
use of Gspace can get your account lock.

Code:
GSpace is a third-party add-on that is a violation of the Google Terms of Service. It is NOT supported by Google, and using it makes your

GMail account subject to termination. We can't provide any help, and
neither can Google. It's possible that Google found a way to block
this kind of inappropriate use.

So there is not any guarantee about the safety of files stored on Gmail. Please tell me your viewpoint.

See our GMail FAQ which is now pinned to the top of this thread. There is always the danger that Google will lock your account, but they only do it for 24 hours.

Lets look at the Pro's and cons:

Advantages:

1. it is free !
2. You can use some nice tools to access the mail, which include some nice mobile tools.
3. Google provides some nice search tools

DisAdvantages:

1. It is against the Google TOS but up to now we have only ever heard of users being locked out for around 24 hours

2. If you data backup is important to you then why not use a cheap paid for service. You can get your own Amazon S3 account for $0.15 pper GigaByte for the first 50 Terrabyte - so a few Gig will only cost you 45 cents a month.

We support Google because a lot of people like to use it. We also support other free ways to store files as well as paid ways to store files. The choice as they say, is yours, as to how you want to proceed and where you want to store files.

What a great idea ! I almost forgot about the cloud storage service. According to you, which is better to use with SMEStorage, Amazon S3 or Mosso ? They are both cheap, but I am not sure about their quality and reliability. Could you please give me an advice ?

Amazon S3 is more mature and slightly cheaper so that would be our recommendation. If you want to register for Amazon S3 and then use your own keys with our service you can apply via OpenS3.com - we'll make sure you get approved.

Some more questions please, what kind are the prices listed at http://www.smetube.com/smestorage/?p=uregister  ? Are they monthly, annually or one-time fee ? Do you plan to change the fee in the future ? I do not live in USA or Europe, can I register Amazon S3 ? What does "keys" mean when you mention about OpenS3 ?

The prices are monthly. If you choose to use our service then we already have Amazon S3 enabled and you will be getting all the benefits of hosting on Amazon but through our account. If you want to register for your own account you can register with Amazon S3, get some keys and use these keys (which you own) to use our service.

Prices are subscription based and monthly.
