Hi Guys,

thanks for this nice tool. I just tried to upload a folder to my Gmail account, this folder contained various subfolders as well as files in clear and password protected zipfiles. Everything transferred perfectly except the password protected zipfiles.

How comes?

As I dont' trust Google enough as to store my sensitive data on their servers in clear I think this should be an issue to be addressed to.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi ! This looks like a Google issue rather than a SMEStorage issue. Our Google integration uses email posted to Google with attachments. We've seen Google reject password protected zip files in the past if they cannot interrogate them with their virus checking tools.

An alternative to protect your files is to upload and choose to encrypt your files using SMEStorage. We provide SHA-1 encryption for files.

Wow, that was a fast answer, thank you!!!!!

In the meantime I've done some more tries and this are the results:
1. using the Gspace plugin instead of the fireuploader plugin all encrypted files have been transmitted
2. reading your newsflash from dec. 18th I saw that I haven't been asked by fireuploader wether to encrypt or not, so I disinstalled fireuploader again
3. I tried to install your firefox plugin from here http://www.thesmespace.com/blog/?p=43 but I only reach an Access denied page
4. Most important: my goal was to use gmail online storage for backing up my data folder. Within this folder 99% of all files will stay always the same with only a few files being added each time. Unfortunately the Gspace plugin told me that it cannot overwrite existing folders. I've been hoping that the plugin would recognize by itself which files already have been transmitted and transfer only the new ones...
That means that with Gspace I would have to delete the folder on Gmail and transmit the whole one again, a very time consuming job.
Is your plugin working differently?

Next problem encountered:

as I guess that SMEStorage is available only on Amazon S3 I tried to upgrade through MyAccount to the free S3+Gmail option. Unfortunately I've been brought to a Paypal page that said that the link is outdated...

Hi. Currently the encryption is only available using our Ajax upload tools. We haven't added it into our Firefox plug-in yet. It is also available in a future version of our windows tooling. We have not release this yet but you can download an advanced beta at: http://www.smetube.com/smestorage/files/fe3ebc40825f5e563dd971cde7f95ba4.zip

This also provides sync tools, and plug-ins to MS Office / Open Office, and a virtual windows drive.

Also the correct FireFox Uploader link is at: http://www.smetube.com/smestorage/files/64dd019311cc18886348d0d593802b59.xpi. We have update the blog entry to repoint it at this link, thanks for picking this up.

Our GMail backup service allows you to treat GMail as a storage cloud and just store files there and access them using our variety of tools. When you first sync it will pick up any files, folders that are in the account. However if you are adding any new files and folders outside of our tool you have the option to resync by going to My Account->My Providers and then choosing to resynchronise the meta-data to ensure that all references within SMEStorage are up to date.

Yes, our Paypal link is for upgrades to paying users rather than upgrading from one free service to another. This is a bug and we will push out a fix for this in the next 24 hours. In the meantime we have changed your account to be a GMail+S3 Account. This allows you to use but services but see one virtual files system through smestorage. You will need to go to My Account -> My Providers to ensure that all your allowed cloud providers are active and to set which one you want to be the default.

Hi admin,

first of all I would like to tell you that I have never ever received such a fast and exhaustive support in any Forum! My compliments and thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

Regarding my problem though I guess that SMEStorage is not the one that can help me really out... :-(
If you allow me, I try to explain my situation and maybe you or some other reader has an idea on ho to resolve it.

1. I have one folder on my HD containing many subfolders and even much more data files. Size of everything is about 7GB
2. These data files are usually not modified but I add continuously new ones, making the folder even bigger
3. I would like to have an online backup copy just in case
4. As some of the files are sensitive I prefer to encrypt them, right now I use the free version of Backup4all doing this job which creates one zip file for each single data file and not one huge zipfile containing everything. This is important in case I want to access just a couple of small files over the Internet in a way that I don't have to download the whole 7GB file everytime.
5. My idea was to use a FileManager in the old Norton Commander style, which is the same as Fireuploader or Gspace style and copying the first time the whole folder to the online storage space.
6. Later then, let's say once a week or whenever necessary, I would like to issue that same folder copy command but of course without willing to copy all the 9GB again, just the few new or modified files. Unfortunately this has to be done automatically as one single folder copy command as in the moment of issuing it I will have no clue anymore as of which files in which subfolder have been added or modified, therefor a single file upload like I saw it in SMEStorage's Ajax upload tool is not applicable.
7. Last but not least, this online storage should be possibly free or very, very cheap :-)

Do you have any idea with which tools and with which storage site I can accomplish this task?

Thanks again!!!

Well from a SMEStorage point of view I think the closest we could come to helping would be why using our Windows Sync tools. If you installed the windows tools from the link earlier in this thread. One of the things that is installed is a sync centre. Here you can designate a directory which can sync'd with your smestorage account at a time that you decide. So if you leave your PC on overnight you could decide to do it then.

From the directory you designate as the sync directory, the sync agent will only upload any new or changed files from your PC.

You can choose to have the files encrypted or not.

I hope this helps !

By the way, I also meant to add that in terms of price, if you choose to use a Gmail or email account as your storage then this is what will be used by SMEStorage so in essence you are getting free storage. There are some restrictions on this:

- If you choose GMail then Google can shut down your account for 24 hours if they identify large storage transfers.

- Of course you can use another email system that has POP3 or IMAP. There are several that provide GB's of storage.

- GMail enables only files of 10MB to be used as attachments so this is the largest file size that you can use for transfer with GMail.

Of course Amazon and other providers do not have this restriction.

Hi admin,

thanks for the suggestion for using your Sync Manager. I tried it out yesterday night and everything seemed to work well, the program transferred a lot of files, at least it seemed like that.
After some hours of transmission I had to reset my PC due to some program that hung. After rebooting I checked into my Gspace account with Fireuploader as well as manually and I could not see any of the files I transmitted. Fireuploader shows the directories transmitted so far but they are all empty.
Entering Gmail manually yesterday night showed no files at all, this morning instead there are about 250 of more than 1700 that I transmitted.

What happened? Any idea?

After doing some testing, I suspect that GMail stopped processing files which it can do if it picks up you are using the account for storage. I suspect this happened after the first 250.

We tweaked our Gmail upload setting so you may want to try again. I'd suggest doing it with a small amount of files first, say 500 and then check status.

Hi,

I guess I miss some basic understandings. How exactly Sync Center and Fireuploader work together and where are my files sent to while they seem to be syncing?

First of all I deleted manually all files in Gmail, then I deleted the synced folders from yesterday within SME Explorer. After that as you said before I did some testing with just a few files, I think 20-30. In the Sync Center everything went fine, in SME Explorer I can see the folders that have been synced, but entering Gmail I cannot see any of the files synced today (30 minutes ago).
If I open Fireuploader I can see the old and already deleted folders from yesterday as well as the new folders from today but all with 0 files in it.

What am I doing wrong? :-(

Is it maybe like that, that Sync Center sends my files first to your server and then you transform them into emails and mail them to Gmail? If so, isn't that an enourmous waste and cost of bandwith on your side? Wouldn't it be smarter to let SyncCenter convert the files to email directly?

Sync and FireUploader do not work together. They both use the SMEStorage API to post files.

If you have not emptied the trash then the files are only marked for deletion and can still be seen if you login via SMEStorage FireUploader. You have 30 days to either re-instate them or empty the trash before they disappear.

Each of our cloud providers plug into a base common infrastructure layer which is all leveraged using the same API. In the case of GMail files are posted to GMail as emails for post and for read, we treat GMail as a file system and are able to read back the attachments as files.

Post is working fine for us to a test GMail account via the Ajax web browser and also via sync. Are you able to post normally to your GMail account via the Ajax File Manager and see the files in GMail ?

I just tried to upload a file via the AJAX uploader and it appeared immediately on my Gmail account.
But the files using SyncCenter 4 hours ago are still not shown...

we'll do some more investigation on this today and post what we find.

OK, we have come across a couple of bugs in the beta tools for sync. We'll update this and post another link here that should fix your problem and enable you take advantage of this for Gmail.
