AS I understand, I should be able to do the following...but I can't quite see how using your tools.

1) Select a folder (and subfolders...ideally be able to 'deselect' some of these), for sync
2) sync these to SMESpace, which will distribute them across my storage providers (and I'll be able to see where each is by using your file browser)

When I try and use the Sync Center, I can't see how to add folders to just upload them to the storage space - when I try, it looks like it's copying these to a space on my hard drive...which I obviously don't want for 2 reasons 1) duplication 2) it won't propagate changes (or deletions/additions)

The sync center doesn't seem to have any walk-through guidance on the 'wiki'

If the sync center itself cannot do this, is it possible to set up another providers sync software to send data to SMESpace, for it to then 'do its thing'?

On a related issue, ideally I'd like to be able to tell SMESpace how much space it can use on each of my storage centers (either as a % or more likely in gb terms).

Hi. They way the sync tools work for windows is that they sync files that reside in our storage cloud back to the computer you have the sync tools installed on (to the sync directory), and they sync any files that reside in your nominated sync directory back up to the cloud if they are not already there or the timestamp has changed.

This sync will always be to your 'primary' cloud provider which you can nominate through either the windows explorer tool before you sync, or via MyAccount-> Providers from the SMEStorage.com website. Currently we do not support striping across your cloud providers, but we are considering it as a forthcoming feature so your feedback on this is welcome.

It is important to note that it is still possible to have files stored on different clouds if you change the default provider between sync as the syncs are decided on the meta-data that is stored on smestorage about the files

i.e. if your default provider is GMail and you sync files a,b and c from your sync directory they will reside on GMail. If you then change the default provider to Box.net, for example, and add files d & e to your sync directory, these files will reside on Box.net, and files a,b, & c will continue to reside on GMail.

Also you do not have to do a two way sync. You can choose just to 'sync up' or to 'sync down'.

In terms of the sync, the way it works is that you have a nominated Sync Directory. By default this is My Documents/My Sync unless you change it. Anything that you add to your nominated Sync directory will be sync'd up to the cloud on your next sync. You can add files / folder directly to your sync directory or via the Sync Control Panel. If you add a root folder from the Sync Control panel then all files and folders that are contained will be copied to you Sync folder.

Re, the ability to set the amount of space to be used. Again this is quite straight-forward for us to add, and I agree it would make sense to add this in conjunction with striping. I'll add these features as a roadmap item, and expect to see them before the end of the year in the product.

Thanks for the response, it's certainly interesting.  While I understand the merit of being able to access files from various 'clouds' as if they were in the same place, I think striping would be an incredibly powerful improvement on the system, particularly for people like me looking to integrate a variety of, perhaps quite small, free online storage sites.

I suspect I'll wait for the systems to be updated before backing up in any serious way using SMESpace.  If I can be of use trailing any updates contact me about trailing & feedback.

I'm not quite sure why the sync system is set up as it is.  Presumably it's set to upload whatever is inside a single folder, i.e. everything in it...but it isn't clear to me why this couldn't be changed to upload a set of folders, particularly useful on vista/windows 7 where under my user directory (simon) I have 'music', 'pictures'. 'documents' etc. and I want to upload it all except music, so I either need to be able to deselect folders, or/and select multiple folders.

Cheers

Hi, thanks for the detailed response. There are alternative ways of doing sync, one way is to do this from a single folder, analgous to mybriefase sync in windows.

You are right I think we could support having an alternative sync mechanism quite quickly that allows you to use the based My Documents, My Music, My Pictures folders.

I'll see if we can add this to our new build of the windows tooling.

Striping will take a little longer as we want to build this in at an api level so it is available for all tools, but I'm confident you will see this before the end of the year.

For us supporting multiple clouds is not just about seeing all the clouds in one place, although we do believe that users have data stored in many different places on many different types of clouds and having a single place to see all this data is valuable.

Building out a platform such as what we have also allows you to move from one provider to another, very easily. It also allow you to have a backup cloud, for example, and it allows us to build one value added service that can be used by any of the providers we supports. A good example of this is our recent wordpress backup plug-in which can be used on any of the clouds we support.

Any progress on striping yet?

Hi. Thanks for the email. We're due to do a major platform and tooling relaunch on 13th January. This will involve a revised sync feature which lets you choose folders from anywhere rather than sticking with a single folder briefcase paradigm.

We've not added the striping feature yet. It is likely this will make the Feb build of the windows tools.

If you are interested I can send you a link to a pre-launch version of the new windows tools, just drop me an email - Neil AT TheSMESpace DOT COM.

It's still on the long term roadmap. We've just had some more pressing features (and clients) to get out.

The sync tools have been revised quite a bit since we last discussed this so if you are a registered user drop us an email and I will send you the revised version.
